If you find that your child has a head lice infestation, you should purchase Nix Cream Rinse or RID at your local drug store. This medication is available over-the-counter without a prescription. Use as directed on the box. If this is ineffective, another treatment at home is possible although it is a little messy. Applying a liberal coat of Vaseline to the entire scalp overnight can suffocate the lice and kill them effectively. Use dish-washing detergent to remove the Vaseline the next morning. If you cannot get rid of the problem with the above measures, you should bring your child to the office for an office visit. Effective, yet expensive treatment options are available. Remember that head lice cause no diseases in humans.  They are a pest, but not a serious condition.

If your child has a scabies infection manifested by itching red raised bumps, especially in the spaces between the fingers, you should bring your child in for a regular office visit. Treatment options are available.
