HAEMOPHILUS INFLUENZA TYPE B VACCINE
HIB
This immunization prevents invasive infections due to Haemophilus Influenza type B bacteria. The most serious of these is meningitis, but also includes buccal cellulitis, pneumonia, and sepsis (blood infection). Side effects of the HIB vaccine are very uncommon.
This vaccine has virtually eliminated the most common form of meningitis that we as pediatricians previously routinely treated just two decades ago. This vaccine has been a medical miracle for young children, with the virtual eradication of the leading cause of meningitis in young children. Because HIB still exists in the world, it is important to continue to protect our children with immunization against it.
