LICE, SCABIES

Head Lice

If you find that your child has a head lice infestation, you should purchase Nix Cream Rinse or RID at your local drug store. This medication is avail- able over-the-counter without a prescription. Use as directed on the box.

If this is ineffective, you may try applying a liberal coat of Vaseline to the entire scalp overnight which can suffocate the lice and kill them effectively. Then use dish-washing detergent to remove the Vaseline the next morning. If you cannot get rid of the problem with the above measures, you should bring your child for an office visit. Other effective, yet expensive treatment options are available by prescription at a pharmacy.

Remember that head lice cause no diseases in humans. They are a pest but not a serious health condition.

Scabies

If your child has a scabies infection manifested by itching red bumps, especially in the spaces between the fingers, you should bring your child in for a regular office visit.
