INGROWN TOENAIL

An ingrown toenail, also known as onychocryptosis, occurs when the edge of the toenail grows into the skin of the surrounding nail fold, often leading to pain, redness, and swelling as the nail cuts into the skin. This common condition typically affects the big toe and may result in infection if not addressed properly.

Several factors can contribute to the development of an ingrown toenail, including improper toenail trimming (cutting nails too short or rounding the edges), wearing tight or ill-fitting footwear, and injuries to the nail or toe. Additionally, genetic predispositions such as naturally curved or thick toenails may increase the risk.

Treatment for an ingrown toenail varies depending on the severity of the condition. For mild cases, home care can alleviate symptoms and prevent further issues. Try the following:

  1. Epsom Salt Soaks: To relieve discomfort from an ingrown toenail, you'll need one tablespoon of Epsom salt and warm water. Fill a basin with enough warm water to cover your foot, ensuring the water is not too hot. Dissolve one tablespoon of Epsom salt per quart of water. Soak your foot in this solution for 15-20 minutes. Repeat 2-3 times daily to reduce swelling, relieve pain, and soften the skin around the toenail. After soaking, dry your foot thoroughly to prevent moisture buildup. If the ingrown toenail continues to cause severe pain, becomes swollen, it is best to make a visit to our office. An infection may be present.
  2. Over-the-counter pain relief, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can help manage discomfort.
  3. If the ingrown toenail is severe, we may need to remove part of the nail and prescribe antibiotics. Podiatrists (foot doctors) are particularly good at removing part of the ingrown nail in order to give relief.

To prevent future issues, wear comfortable footwear with ample space for your toes and maintain proper foot hygiene. In chronic or severe cases, more permanent solutions may involve surgical intervention to remove or reshape the nail and prevent recurrence. Maintaining proper foot hygiene and regularly trimming nails straight across can significantly reduce the likelihood of developing ingrown toenails.
